Our commitment, and the standard for all who write for us, has always been to a thoughtful and in-depth form of travel journalism, valuing rigour and a deep appreciation for the stories embedded in the places we visit.

To truly honour the scale of this mission, we recognise the need to look beyond a single perspective. The world’s stories are too vast, too varied, and too profound to be told by one voice alone. It is with this understanding that we are now opening our pages to new contributors—fellow explorers, researchers, and storytellers who can bring fresh insight and specialist knowledge to our collective endeavour, helping us to chart new territories and delve deeper into familiar ones.

It is important to state that Past & Passage is, at its heart, a passion project. It was founded and continues to be run as a labour of love, led entirely by volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise for the joy of creating a unique and valuable resource. This spirit of collaborative, non-commercial enthusiasm is the foundation upon which our platform is built and the energy that sustains our work.

Consequently, we wish to be transparent that we cannot offer financial remuneration for contributions. All collaborations are undertaken voluntarily, rooted in a shared commitment to our subject matter. Who We Are Looking For

We are not looking for conventional travel diaries, but rather for unique, well-researched perspectives. • Travellers with the Soul of a Historian: Individuals who do not just visit a place, but meticulously investigate its layers of history, its architecture, and its societal context. Your writing should reflect a genuine curiosity and a commitment to historical accuracy.
  
• Photographers with a Visual Narrative: Accomplished photographers, whether professional or amateur, whose work transcends the purely aesthetic. We are looking for photo essays that tell a story, capture a distinct atmosphere, and reveal details that casual observation might miss.
  
• Local Experts and Guides: No one understands a place like those who inhabit it. We welcome contributions from registered tour guides, archaeologists, architects, or local historians who can offer an insider’s perspective grounded in profound knowledge.
  
• Academics and Specialists: Researchers, postgraduates, and other specialists with the ability to translate their academic expertise into an accessible yet intellectually engaging article. Your work should be able to captivate a cultured and curious audience without sacrificing scholarly rigour.

Types of Submissions We Welcome

To maintain a consistent style and depth across our platform, we are currently accepting submissions in the following formats. Please ensure your proposed idea aligns with one of these categories before submitting your pitch.

• In-depth Destination Guides: This is our cornerstone content. We are looking for long-form features (typically 3,000 words or more) that offer a comprehensive exploration of a specific city, region, or historical route. A successful guide must weave together rich historical context with practical, first-hand advice for the discerning cultural traveller. Submissions should demonstrate significant research and a personal, engaging narrative voice.
  
• Photo Essays: We believe in the power of visual storytelling. We welcome submissions for photo essays consisting of 10-15 high-quality, high-resolution images. Each essay must be accompanied by a compelling introductory text (approx. 300-500 words) to set the scene, as well as detailed captions for each photograph to provide context and deepen the narrative. The collection as a whole should present a cohesive and insightful story.
  
• Research-led Features: These articles explore a specific topic within the broader themes of history, culture, and travel. We are particularly interested in features that illuminate a unique subject, such as the architectural legacy of a particular civilisation in a region, the intricate history of an emblematic building, or the origins and evolution of a significant cultural tradition. The tone should be authoritative and well-researched, yet written in an accessible style for an intelligent, non-specialist audience.

Our Editorial Guidelines

To preserve the quality and coherence that our readers have come to expect from Past & Passage, we require all contributions to strictly adhere to the following editorial standards. These are non-negotiable and form the basis of our collaborative relationship.

• Rigour and Fact-Checking: Intellectual honesty is paramount. All historical claims, dates, and factual statements must be meticulously researched and accurate. Whilst we do not require academic-style citations in the final text, we expect you to have verifiable sources for your information and may ask for clarification during the editing process.
  
• Narrative Quality: We look for exceptional writing. Your submission should be well-structured, articulate, and written in a compelling and considered tone. The narrative should be engaging for an intelligent audience, avoiding clichés and providing genuine insight. All submissions must be written in clear, high-quality British English.
  
• High-Quality Photography If your submission includes photography, all images must be your own original work. They must be supplied in high resolution (minimum 3000px on the longest side), well-composed, and professionally edited. We do not, under any circumstances, accept stock photography or images sourced from third parties.
  
• Original and Exclusive Content: We only publish original material. Your submitted article or photo essay must not have been previously published anywhere else, either in print or online. This includes personal blogs, other travel websites, and social media platforms. Upon acceptance, we require a brief period of exclusivity.

The Pitching Process: How to Propose an Idea

To ensure that your idea is a good fit for our editorial direction and to respect the time you invest in your work, we operate on a pitch-first basis. Please do not send completed articles or photo essays. Instead, we invite you to submit a detailed proposal by following the steps below.

1. Submit Your Pitch via Email: Please send your proposal to submissions@pastandpassage.com. To ensure your email is correctly filtered, please use the following format for the subject line: Article Pitch: [Your tentative title]
   
2. What to Include in Your Pitch: Your email should provide us with a clear and comprehensive overview of your proposed contribution. Please include the following four elements:
   
   • A Synopsis: A concise summary of your idea (approximately 2-3 paragraphs). This should clearly state your topic, your unique angle or argument, and why it would be of interest to the Past & Passage readership.
     
   • A Brief Outline: A bulleted list or short paragraph detailing the intended structure of your article or photo essay.
     
   • Your Biography: A few sentences about yourself, highlighting your experience, expertise, or authority on the proposed subject.
     
   • Published Work: Please provide links to 2-3 examples of your previously published writing or your online photography portfolio.
     
3. Review and Response: We review every pitch that we receive. If your proposal is a good fit for our current editorial needs, we will be in touch within two to three weeks to discuss deadlines and further details. Whilst we endeavour to respond to as many enquiries as possible, please note that due to the volume of submissions, we may not be able to reply to unsuccessful pitches.
